50 Years of Warhol’s ‘Campbell’s Soup Cans’

Andy Warhol, Campbell's Soup Cans, Park West Gallery

TITLE: “Campbell’s Soup Cans”

ARTIST: Andy Warhol

DATE: 1962

WHY WE CHOSE IT: On this day in 1962, Ferus Gallery (Los Angeles) was the first to exhibit pop artist Andy Warhol’s now-famous set of 32 Campbell’s soup cans. The prints were identical, except for the flavors inscribed on the can labels. The set was displayed in a single line across the gallery, suggestive of a grocery shelf.
