WHY WE CHOSE IT: It was 53 years ago today that the Barbie doll was first introduced at the American Toy Fair in New York City. The toy’s inventor, Ruth Handler (co-founder of Mattel), named the fashionable doll after her own daughter Barbara.
Since Barbie’s debut, more than 800 million dolls in the Barbie family have been sold. Barbie has also become a muse for various artists and designers including Peter Max, Andy Warhol and Karl Lagerfeld. “I cropped her and painted her as if she was a living character, a celebrity that would be on Oprah or the ‘Today Show,’” Max once said of his Barbie-inspired portrait.

TITLE: “Columbus”

WHY WE CHOSE IT: Columbus Day, observed on the second Monday in October, commemorates the landing of Christopher Columbus in the New World on October 12, 1492. Unofficially celebrated as early as the 18th century, it eventually became a U.S. federal holiday in 1937.
By an Act of Congress, pop artist Peter Max was appointed as the Official Artist for the nation’s Quincentennial Columbus Day festivities. He hosted Prince Juan Carlos of Spain and a group of more than 50 United Nations delegates at the 1992 celebration on Governor’s Island.
