End of Summer

Yuval Wolfson, Park West Gallery, Summer

TITLE: “End of Summer”

ARTIST: Yuval Wolfson

DATE: 2006

WHY WE CHOSE IT: The official start of autumn isn’t until September 22, but now that Labor Day weekend is over and kids are heading back to school, summer seems to be quickly fading away. What’s your fondest memory from this summer?

Goodbye, July

Jacques-Joseph Tissot, July, Park West Gallery

TITLE: “Seaside (July: Specimen of a Portrait)”

ARTIST: James Tissot

DATE: 1878

WHY WE CHOSE IT: July has quickly come and almost gone. Doesn’t it seem like we were just celebrating Independence Day? But plans are already being made for Labor Day weekend, back-to-school commercials have begun to play and fall fashions are starting to fill department stores…

This painting belongs to a series of allegories representing various months of the year. The sitter’s relaxed pose and the distant beach suggest a summer vacation by the sea. Bright sunlight is reflected off the sand and filtered through the awning into the room, where it rebounds from the woman’s ruffled dress onto her face. —From The Cleveland Museum of Art
