TITLE: “Shadow Show”

WHY WE CHOSE IT: Despite our unseasonably mild winter, famous meteorologist/groundhog Punxsutawney Phil emerged from his lair in Gobbler’s Knob, Pennsylvania this morning and saw his shadow. According to Phil’s prediction, we’re in for six more weeks of winter — but with weather like this, does anybody really seem to mind?

WHY WE CHOSE IT:
“The air is perfectly quiescent and all is stillness, as if Nature, after her exertions during the Summer, were now at rest.” —John Bradbury, from “Travels in the Interior of America” (1817)
Naturalist John Bradbury was describing the phenomenon known as an Indian Summer, a period between late September and mid-November, often characterized by above-normal temperatures coupled with dry conditions.
Those of us in the Midwest have been enjoying the unusually warm temperatures as of late, though we can’t help but wonder how long it’ll be until that cold white powder begins to fall…
